Catholics believe that marriage is God’s gift of a partner for life. God gives you to one another to help you fulfill your mission on earth – “to learn how to love.” Your love is a special and unique sharing in the mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection. As a marrying couple, you publicly proclaim by your vows before God and the faith community that you intend your life together to reflect the self-giving love that Jesus has for his people, the Church.
In Matrimony, a baptized man and woman are united with each other as a sign of the unity between Jesus and his Church. Matrimony requires the consent of the couple, as expressed in the marriage promises. The couple and their wedding rings are the signs of this sacrament.

It is a love which is:
Forever- “Until death do us part.”
Faithful- Exclusively for one another.
Fruitful- Open to the possibility of new life.
Love is the “fundamental and innate vocation of every human being.” (CCC #1604) We are all created in the image and likeness of God, who is Himself love. Since God created us male and female, the mutual love between husband and wife becomes an image of the absolute and unfailing love with which the Lord loves us. All married couples become this sacramental sign – in their covenant, they reflect Christ and his eternal pledge of love for his bride, the Church.
